How to Cure Your Sun Allergy Reaction... Day 3

The Two Simple Principles for Curing Sun Allergies

Yesterday, we talked about the three causes of allergic reactions to sun. Just as a reminder, the three causes are:

  1. Irritation from the wrong shampoo.
  2. More irritation by the wrong skin care products.
  3. Even more irritation from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Today, we'll examine the Two Simple Principles of curing sun allergies...

To cure your sun allergy, you need:

(1) A shampoo that does not irritate skin,
and more importantly...

(2) Skin care products TESTED for UV irritation.

When we counsel people on their sun allergies, we go through each of the three causes of allergic reactions to the sun.

Someone who suffers from allergic reactions to sunlight has already been staying out of the sun.

So we focus on the other two causes of sunlight allergy.

It's a pretty simple matter to provide the right shampoo. We simply recommend that you only use a shampoo if it:

  1. Does not contain lauryl sulfates or laureth sulfates
  2. Is not advertised as "natural" (because "natural" shampoos contain many irritating ingredients)

(Later, we will recommend a specific shampoo for you to use.)

But before we get there...

You need skin care products
tested and proven to end sun allergies.

This is much harder to do, because most skin care products work just fine when you are inside.

How do you know if your skin care products will react with the sun and give you a sun allergy?

And it seems that every skin care product out there claims to be "hypoallergenic".

But dermatologists know that "hypoallergenic" does not mean "tested for sun allergies".

No, there is only one way to know that a skin care product does not cause sun allergy.

The skin care products must be tested for allergic reactions to the sun.

Dermatology researchers use a standard set of tests for this. Doing the tests can be quite complicated. But the concepts behind the test itself are quite simple:

  1. First, irritate one spot on the skin (usually the forearm). Often, the irritating substance is sodium lauryl sulfate - one of the main irritating ingredients in shampoos.
  2. Then, put a skin care product on that spot.
  3. Next, apply ultraviolet rays from a machine to that spot.
  4. Finally, examine the skin after a few hours and after 1 or 2 days, to see the skin's reaction.

To end your sun allergies once and for all, you need to find skin care products that have been tested for sun allergies and ultraviolet rays.

We want to give you one warning here:

Do not wash your face with regular soap!

We say this now because some people hear our advice and stop using skin care products.

They switch to plain soap instead, thinking that will help.

But there's one problem with that. Soap dries skin. And dry skin is more vulnerable to irritation, and therefore to sun allergies.

Even a moisturizing soap dries skin - and the moisturizers in the soap are probably not tested for sun allergies.

Don't worry, though. We will point you in the right direction with your skin care products.

For now, we'll close with this thought: We gave you the Two Simple Principles for curing allergic reactions to sunlight at the start of today's conversation, but it's worth saying again...

To cure your sun allergy, you need:

(1) A shampoo that does not irritate skin, and...

(2) Skin care products TESTED for UV irritation.

Tomorrow, we'll share with you:

Why most skin care products cause sun allergies

See you soon!
